The School Counselor is committed to helping students achieve their personal best.
 
 
Who is your school counselor?
Ms. Hannigan is the school counselor for all students in grades 5-8.

What does the school counselor do?                                                                                              The school counselor uses a variety of strategies, activities, and resources to address the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students. The school counselor serves as a student advocate who ascribes to the belief that all students can learn. 

In an effort to support the healthy development of all students, the school counselor assists students, parents, teachers, and administrators with a variety of services including:

  • Counseling: individual and small group counseling, goal setting, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and stress management in a safe environment. Assisting students with issues that are related to the natural process of "growing up"
  • Collaboration: work with student, parents/guardians, school staff and the community to promote the academic, physical, emotional safety of all students and ensure all students meet the stated goals and standards of New York State
  • Scheduling: building the HFMS master schedule as well as individual schedules for all teachers and students

Additional Support
In addition to your child’s Guidance Counselor, there is a School Psychologist located at the middle school to help your child succeed through the middle school years.  Mrs. Maryann Martinez is our School Psychologist and her role includes:
  • consultation with school personnel and families about students’ learning and behavior
  • assessment of academic skills and aptitudes, social/emotional development, and eligibility of special services
  • individual and group counseling
