Welcome to the Nurse's Office

From the very first day of school your child’s health will become a shared concern. You will begin working with school staff members who will care for your child on a daily basis. There are several ways in which parents can help their children prepare for learning:

Illness

Keep your child home if signs of illness are present:

Children should be free of fever or vomiting for twenty-four hours before returning to school.

Physicals

N.Y.S. Dept. of Education Laws require that the following students receive a physical examination:

Physical exam must be within one calendar year to be acceptable. If the physical expires prior to the beginning of another sport a new exam is required.

Immunizations

N.Y. S. Immunization requirements for school entrance are as follows:

No student will be allowed to start school without proof of immunization. Failure to complete any of the above will cause child to be excluded from school.

Screenings

Vision and hearing screenings are done annually. Parents will be notified if a concern is found. It is in your child’s best interest to follow up with a visit to your family doctor or optometrist.

Injuries

First aid is given for injuries, illnesses, and accidents occurring during school hours. You may be called and told your child needs to go home or be seen by a medical professional. Besides your home and work numbers, please be sure to have a CURRENT and LOCAL emergency contact person on file. Make sure these people are aware and willing to take on the responsibility of a sick or injured child.

Please call the school by 8:30a if your child will be absent, then provide a written excuse to the main office upon their return.

Please inform the health office of any special health problems, needs, or concerns your child may have or that may arise during the school year . The health office should know of any medication your child may be taking in case of an emergency. Strict confidentiality will be adhered to. Staff is notified on a need to know basis with parental permission.

Medications

Students may not carry medications to and from school, nor keep them in their possession. If it is absolutely necessary for your child to receive medication during the school day, written parental permission AND a physician’s written order is required before any medication will be administered. This is inclusive of all prescription and over-the-counter medications. Parents also have to provide medication (Tylenol, Motrin, etc.) in original container labeled with child’s name. Special considerations are given to emergency medications such as inhalers and Epi-pens if the student is responsible.

Physical Education

If a student needs to be excused form participating in PE class due to an injury or illness for more than one week the request must be accompanied with a physician’s note indicating diagnosis, length of non-participation and date that student may resume PE. Any use of crutches in school must be accompanied by a physician’s note.

Together we can make sure to avoid any obstacles to learning. Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions or concerns that may arise during the school year.
