OT WITH CHILDREN

    OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FOR CHILDREN

     

    Pediatric OT services are broken up into three intervention areas depending on the child’s age.  Treatment focus is varied to address the child’s development.   

     

    “The profession of Occupational Therapy is concerned with a person’s ability to participate in desired daily life activities or “occupations”.  In the schools, Occupational Therapists use their unique expertise to help children to be prepared for and perform important learning and school related activities and to fulfill their role as students.  In this setting, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants support academic and non-academic outcomes.”  (AOTA, 1994) 

     

     

    Early intervention Occupational Therapy

    v  Is provided to infants and toddlers ages 0-3 years old who demonstrate developmental delays in the areas of physical domain (motor skills) and/or adaptive domain (self care or daily living skills)

    v  Must have an OT evaluation following an assessment through the county’s Early Intervention program

    v  Services require a signed prescription from the child’ physician

    v  Uses relevant purposeful activities to improve and develop necessary skills for independence in play and self care

    v  Addresses concerns with the achievement of developmental milestones (rolling over, sitting up, etc.), self care (holding bottle, feeling self, removing socks, etc.), fine motor (grasping of objects, etc.), visual motor (completing simple puzzles, sorting objects, etc.), and sensory processing (response/interaction with environmental sensory experiences)

     Preschool Occupational Therapy

    v  Is provided to children ages 3-5 years old who demonstrate developmental delays in the areas of physical domain and/or adaptive domain

    v  Must be referred through the Committee of Preschool Special Education for an evaluation to be completed

    v  Services require a signed prescription from the child’s physician

    v  Uses purposeful activities to improve or develop the skills necessary for independence with play, self care, and preschool developmental motor skills

    v  Addresses concerns with self care, fine motor, visual motor, sensory processing, and motor planning

     School based Occupational Therapy

    v  Is provided during school hours to children ages 5 to 21 years old

    v  Must be referred through the Committee of Special Education for an evaluation to be completed therefore being eligible for special education services with an IEP

    v  Services require a signed prescription from the child’s physician

    v  Uses relevant purposeful activities to improve or develop the skills necessary for independence and/or relative success with self care, play, and academic skills as required by their role as a student in an educational setting

    v  Provides equipment, as needed, that will help achieve independence with specific skills in the academic setting (pencil grip, weighted vest, etc.) or that will help teach compensatory strategies for deficit areas (alphasmart, highlighter strip, etc.) 

    v  Addresses concerns with sensory processing, gross motor, fine motor, motor planning, visual perception, visual motor, handwriting, self care, assistive technology
