    Dear Parents/Guardians,

                  More and more of today’s physical education programs are being reviewed and compared to those of yesterday.  Many researchers, physicians, administrators, and teachers have found that we need physical education now more than ever.  Physical education contributes to the total growth and development of the child, acting as an instructional program that gives attention to not just the psychomotor but also the cognitive and affective learning domains.

                  The Surgeon General reports that individuals who exercise regularly are less likely to develop heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, certain forms of cancer and osteoporosis.  When individuals exercise regularly they are more likely to maintain a healthy body weight, decreased arthritis pain and joint problems, and have increased levels of self-esteem and self-confidence throughout their lives. Physically active children have fewer chronic health problems than children who are sedentary.  They are better able to meet the physical demands of daily activity, perform better on physical performance tests, and have a stronger self-image than children who are inactive.

                  Our philosophy in our high school physical education program is to provide a non-threatening, cooperative environment in which we promote the physical, emotional, and social growth of our students.  This is accomplished through both traditional and non-traditional approaches to physical education; which includes skill development, cognitive theory and team play.  The emphasis is on mutual peer respect and harmony, cooperation and trust between students, and the understanding that each person is an individual and learns in different ways.  The program is based on effort and understanding and not related to the outcome.  With a comprehensive physical education program students will acquire lifetime skills needed to promote a healthy and active life.
