Recently, Mrs. Roffman's 9th grade Biology classes approached the challenging concept of genetics in a creative way. Using Play-do, pipe cleaners, yarn, dry erase markers and other materials, the students created a model of the molecular process of protein synthesis. In scientific terms, they explored how DNA translates to mRNA and how amino acids are arranged to make a specific protein. They took this abstract process and made it into a concrete slow-motion movie by taking photos of each phase of the transformation. The students enjoyed the chance to demonstrate their learning and explored some essential genetic processes at the same time.
